Manmohan-SinghNon-inclusion of Madurai in the list of airports declared as international airports including, Coimbatore and Trichy by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh in the meeting with the, Ministers and Secretaries of the key Infrastructure Ministries held on 06th instant at New Delhi has, chagrined and annoyed people in the Southern Districts of Tamilnadu.

Madurai Airport now possess, a high-tech integrated world class terminal building put up at a cost of 130 crore and the runway, extended to 7500 feet to facilitate introduction of international flights. The modernized airport, inaugurated in September 2010 was declared as customs airport on 31st December 2010. Very good, potential both for passenger and freight traffic exists for operation of international flights between, Madurai and Colombo, Kualalumpur, Singapore and Gulf destinations. Madurai is also the gateway, for nine other southern districts in the state for international passenger and freight traffic.

After providing international connectivity, to elevate Madurai Airport to the status of international, airport acquisition of 620 acres of land is in progress. Despite strenuous efforts and the sustained, prayers by Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Central Govt. has not taken any, steps for providing international connectivity to Madurai nor included Madurai Airport in the two, way Bi-Lateral Airport Treaties concluded with other countries, thereby preventing Madurai find a, place in the list of places declared as international airports now and resulting in southern districts in, Tamilnadu continue to suffer from poor industrial and economic growth.

Hence, it is critical that Members of Parliament belonging to southern districts should take up, the matter immediately with the Prime Minister for declaration of Madurai Airport also as an, international airport and take all out efforts for commencing international flights from Madurai, initially to Colombo and Kualalumpur as soon as possible. International connectivity and declaration, of Madurai airport as an international airport will provide enormous boost for the economic and, industrial development and tourism growth in this region.
